Sat, Sept 5, 2009...3rd Annual River Run Invitational (Fisher River Park, Dobson, NC)
This is a great cross country invitational on a course that is similar
to the State Meet Course. Last year we had close to 300 participants.
We have had many powerhouse cross country teams from 1A-4A
classification. Notice the meet is two weeks earlier than it has been
over the past two years. We had a scheduling conflict with the park and
had to move our date to September 5. We also realize this is Labor Day
weekend and we hope this will not deter anyone from coming. This course
is only 10 minutes from Mount Airy NC, 30 minutes from Winston-Salem;
little over an hour from Charlotte and the Hickory area.
Right now we are planning on having a high school boys and girls races,
a middle school boys and girls race and an open adult race. If we have
a lot of runners will we add more divisions. The cost of this
invitational is $70 per school if bringing both boys and girls team. If
you are only bringing one gender of your team it is $40 per team boys
team and $40 per girls team and $5 per individual runners who are not
on a team. This entry fee is to help pay for the trophies, medals, and
other meet management items. This is strictly a non-profit race. The
top two male teams and the top two female teams will receive trophies
and the top 10 finishers in each male and female race will receive
medals. We will also have FAT Timing and scoring for this meet.
We will have six races: Open Non-High School Race for adults and anyone
below middle school age. Adults will run the 5K course and children
will run the 2500 meter loop. Male and female run together.
Middle School Race (Boys and Girls Run together) - Middle Schoolers
will run the 2500
Boys and Girls Varsity races – Only top 5-7 runners per team may run
in this race.
Boys and Girls High School Open Races – All other high school runners
who did not run in the Varsity Race. Top ten (10) finishers in the
Varsity Races will receive medals and the top two (2) teams in the
Varsity Races will receive team trophies. In the open races and middle
school races the top five (5) in each race will receive medals. There
will be no team trophies in the open races or Middle School Race.
Entry Fee:
$70 per school if bringing both boys and girls teams. $40 per boys team.
$40 per girls team. $5 per individual who is not on a team. Schedule:
7:30-8:15 a.m. - Registration for open race (adult and anyone below middle school).
7:30-8:30 a.m. - Course Walk on your own and Packet Pickup at Finish line tent.
8:00 a.m. - Open Non-High School Race (adult and anyone below middle school).

Coach Robert Youtz of Bishop McGuiness and Jeff George of Reynolds HS
will be hosting this high school meet. The course has a lot of
potential, and can easily be adapted for any distance from 3000 to
10000. Most of the course will be on former tobacco fields that are
adjacent to the current park, which has soccer and softball/baseball
fields, concession stands, and bathrooms. The course is mostly grass,
with both open and wooded sections, and will be spectator-friendly. It
should be moderately challenging with one short, steep hill and several
rolling or gradual hills (very little flat ground on the property).
The facility should be well-suited for USATF meets, especially later in
the season. The park is dominated by soccer and softball in Sep. and
Oct., but has mostly open dates from mid-November onward. The soccer
fields allow for a wide start and about 250m of straight-line running
from the start line. The meet directors are hoping to make this into a
championship facility, including inquiring about nearby land that could
be used for satellite parking or course expansions. It's very
promising, With some hard work, it could become one of the major
courses for North Carolina.

Wednesday - December 16, 2009 ...Polk County Reindeer Games (Polk County High
School)
4:00 pm. This year at Polk County High we are supporting the Nation in
its hour of need. Many people are no longer employed, and they are in
financial straits. We have decided to hold the Reindeer Games to raise
both awareness and help the needy. These events will be run along with
the regular events at our Wednesday December 16 Polar Bear Meet. We
will add a couple of relays that are different from our regular events,
and we are considering dropping the 3200 meter run. Please let me know
if your team is interested. Qualifying times, heights, and distances
will count for state qualifying; however, some added events are not
ones that we normally contest at indoor meets. Possible events are the
4x200, the field event 4x100, and the shot put relay. We may invent
others! These relays would be run with large candy canes rather than
relay batons. The purpose of the Reindeer Games is to help provide food
for the needy over the holiday season. An "entry fee" of 1 can of food
per athlete (or $2) will be collected. Spectators will also be
"charged" 1 can of food for admission or $5. The food will be turned
over to the Thermal Belt Outreach for distribution to the needy. Come
and join in the Reindeer Games. Wear something to celebrate the season.
The uniform rule will be somewhat relaxed. Wear antlers, a Santa hat,
be an elf or be more creative. Just do not wear anything that could
cause an injury or interference. We will sign up as usual when we get
to the meet. Sincerely, J. Alan Peoples. Contact: J. Alan Peoples,
